Well, it’s been nearly a month since I’ve been back. I kinda miss China for it’s food and shopping but I never became accustomed to the air, so I’m glad I’m home in Los Angeles. I’ve been trying to keep myself busy to kill time before moving back into school, which by the way, I have a new email address now: diana02@ucla.edu. Please change your address books! Lets see if I can conjure up some highlights of my summer…
Guangzhou, China: crazy traffic everywhere. People spit when they want. Its a wonder how they got rid of SARS. Great food, even better shopping. Found the cutest rip-off prada bag ever after much hunting. China is the place to go for fake stuff…you can’t even tell. Had an encounter with Howard, the giant spider–scared me out of my wits cuz he was just chillin on the air conditioner vents…gives you an idea of how hot it is there…even the aracnos have to cool themselves off.
Guilin, China: picturesque mountains and tons of tourists. I’ll have to post some up when I get my regular computer set up. They’re just like the chinese mountain paintings, where the mountains look almost cartoon-like. Got con-ed into buying a jar of miracle cream because in a demonstration, a dude burned himself and used the cream to heal the burn completely. Thought it might be cool to play with fire when I got home, but thought better of it after I dished out the 100 RMB.
Beijing, China: met tons of new people and went to a corporate party. Made some important connections there for future networking. It was too hot, and besides the governmental tourist sights, didn’t have too much. But I did have the best bowl of JaJaMein there. Oh, and Beijing Duck is a must have. Try this next time: Take duck skin and dip it in coarse sugar. This wonderful combo makes the morsel irresistable! More shopping, more food. My friend got coned into buying 5 slices of kiwi on a skewer for 10RMB because she wanted to find out what “5 Monkey Peaches” were. As we can see, Branding is an important investment.
Shanghai, China: As metro as Matt’s brother Garron! Just joshing…It’s a beautiful city where everything is about asthetics. Prices go up in the city, but it’s worth the hike. Food is delish and so are the trendy hot spots. I overspent on dried mangos because I had an intense craving for them…and needless to say, the Little Dragon Dumplings (Shao Loong Bao) were small in size but the flavor in them had a powerful punch. Didn’t spend much time here since I went to venture off in the neighboring HongZhou and SoZhou–which were breathtaking.
HongZhou and So Zhou: the capital of tea and silk. These two cities capture the best of China.
Hong Kong: My favorite of the whole trip. Great food, even better shopping. They have the Economist in the newsstands! I can definately survive on this island if stranded. Although they didn’t have the taro pies in McD’s, they had a lot of Philippinos there. The McDonalds in Hong Kong can also be known as Philippino town, although I have no clue where they come from. Purchased a new pair of Gucci glasses for way too much, but they’re light as a feather and not worth the money I spent on them. God only knows what compelled me to buy. Better shopping and even better food.
Taiwan: Oscar welcomed me warmly with Din Tai Fung and taiwanese shaved ice as the begining of my mini weekend excursion away from the mainland. Taiwan is very much like Hong Kong aside from the language barrier of taiwanese. We went to view nighttime Shanghai from the top of a tall tower, and then to the night markets to try stinky tofu and taiwanese lemonade. An encounter with Muji (a very trendy trinket store) emptied my wallet…luckily the Jay Chao concert–following my Muji experience–was free. More night markets and good food concluded my stay. Jay Chao, YAY!
I guess all in all, my summer in China was quite eventful. Almost got stuck in the east beacuse they were having a baby convention at the White Swan Hotel..and overbooked our plane. Way to go, China Southern! (they POed a lot of people) Our group only had 4 seats available when we needed 7. The whole plane was full of crying chinese babies, but I managed to sleep through 10 hours of it anyway. More to come about the rest of my summer tomorrow. Stay tuned!
